A Missouri landlord has been charged with felony charges of violating state law by failing to properly disclose the amount of his rental payments.
The St. Louis County prosecutor’s office announced Wednesday that the man, who lives in the town of St. Joseph, was arrested in St. Charles County and charged with one count of failure to file a tax return, according to The St. Clair Times.
The investigation began when the St. Michael, Missouri, Police Department received a report that a man named Kevin C. Walker had a rental agreement with a woman named Michelle C. Thompson, the paper reported.
The woman told the police she was renting a house in St Joseph, which is located about 30 miles south of St Louis, the St Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Walker had been living in the house since November 2016.
He did not file a property tax return with the state in November, which the state requires when a property owner does not have a tax receipt.
The next day, the department received a call from a resident of the home, who said Walker was at the home and that Thompson had moved out.
When officers arrived, they found Walker had apparently been using a prepaid debit card, the affidavit said.
The couple has not been charged in connection with the alleged crimes.
